Is ice dipping allowed in Berlin?
What Berlin law says about swimming, from the official bathing sites and the shores where you swim at your own risk to nature protection and our own experience with the Ordnungsamt.
The short answer
In Berlin you are allowed to swim wherever it is explicitly permitted, which mainly means the Strandbäder and the marked zones of the official bathing sites, of which LAGeSo lists 39. Everywhere else you go into the water at your own risk. We meet on public shores in winter and have never had any trouble with the Ordnungsamt at our dips, and the fines we have heard about were usually connected to nature protection areas or to the COVID rules, rather than to a group having tea at a lake in Wedding on a Saturday morning.
Where to read more
The official map of all bathing sites is published on berlin.de by LAGeSo. If you want some background, the Tagesspiegel has written about illegal bathing spots in Berlin, and berlin.de also has an overview of organised Eisbaden in the city.
Nature protection
Please do not make new paths through the reeds and never climb over fences. Summer bathing has already damaged parts of the lakeshores in Berlin, and in winter we want to leave the lakes exactly the way we found them.
